Great Starter Humidor June 13, 2010

First I will start of saying that I am by no means a cigar expert. I enjoy the occasional cigar, but lately I have found myself buying more and wanting to keep some on hand instead of buying one when I want it. I was looking all over for a small humidor and came across this one. Most of the reviews were decent, so I rolled the dice. Turned out it does exactly what is suppose do if you follow the directions.
I bought the following:
-Cherry Executive Cigar Humidor
-One Step EZ Humidor Seasoning Packet by Boveda
-HygroSet II Adjustable Round Digital Hygrometer
-Boveda One-Step Calibration
-Boveda Humidifier 72%
The Humidor is well built, has a great seal. The one I got was actually much darker than the one pictured. There really isn't much to it. It is basically a box with a cedar lining inside. The Hygrometer that comes with it is garbage. There is a small screw on the back that is not for calibration, even though the instructions say "Some hygrometers have a small screw on the back that will allow you to adjust the reading if incorrect." This is not one of those Hygrometers. Do yourself a favor and buy the Digital Hygrometer; you will be glad you did. I can't speak about the humidifier, since I am not using it and am using the Boveda packs instead.
As soon as I got it I put the Boveda Seasoning pack and let if sit for 14 days. I took the Digital Hygrometer and put it in the Boveda One-Step Calibration bag for 48 hours. After the 48 hours I checked it and it was off by 1 degree, so it was pretty accurate right out of the box. I went ahead and calibrated it using the click dial by 1 degree and put it back in the bag for another 24 hours. After that it was right on the money. After the 14 days for the humidor I put the Hygrometer inside and left it for a few hours. It read 68 RH, which indicated that it was seasoned. I then added 2 Boveda Humidifier 72% packs inside and it has been maintaining 68% inside for about 2 weeks straight now.
One note about the packs, the advertisement is kind of misleading. Since this is a 25 count humidor, you would think you need just 1. Wrong. The actual pack tells you the following:
0-50.....2-3 packs
51-100.....3-4
100-150.....4-5
150-200.....5-6
200-250.....6-7
250-300.....7-8
RH levels will also vary. Just because you buy a 72% RH pack doesn't mean it will be 72%. The pack tells you the following:
Pack 75% RH.....71 - 75%
Pack 72% RH.....68 - 72%
Pack 69% RH.....65 - 69%
Pack 65% RH.....61 - 65%
It took me two 72% packs to maintain 68% for this Humidor.
Bottom line this is a great Humidor for the price and it works as advertised. It's perfect for someone just starting out. Using the Boveda packs does take some patience, but it is well worth it to know you don't have to mess with a humidifier. Packs say they last 2 months, so we'll see how that works out. I recommend it if you get the stuff I did and set it up the same way. So far I very happy with this purchase, at least until my wife makes me a custom one out of KOA.

This is a very nice piece. Finish looks good and the humidor does a fine job of what it was designed to do. The hygrometer that comes with it seems to be a bit crappy, but I'm not very demanding.

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and he really liked it! Just make sure you buy the solution that you need because it's not included. Also it took longer than I expected for the order to ship, so it didn't make it in time for his birthday.
